My name is Jordan Hanson and I'm from Sheboygan Wisconsin. I am currently serving 18 months on extended supervision revocation. Here's my most recent Excursion with drugs and why I believe the system let me down.
Upon my release in April of 2023, my PO was very unhelpful. He told me ”it's not illegal to be homeless” and ”if you use I'll just lock you up.” I had nowhere to go upon release, besides my parents house. I love my parents, but we are completely different people and we've never lived well together, which I told my PO. I received a list of” resources” from him. I called seven different places. Only one of them ever called me back and denied me entry into Sober Living because I am on medications for anxiety and chronic depression.
I got accepted into an Oxford House in Fox Point, Wisconsin which is an extremely prestigious opportunity and my PO denied the transfer stating if I was discharged, I'd have nowhere to go- so in other words, he had no faith in me from the get-go. Needless to say, I had nowhere to go anyway so that point made no sense. I ended up living with my parents, getting a good job and I tried very hard to get my own place but was denied due to my record three separate times.
I relapsed on meth and cocaine after my job let me go with no hours to give me. Shortly thereafter I began failing urinalysis tests for probation. He put me on the list for probation's treatment program and told me it wouldn't be starting for a while. 5 months later he told me it starts in 2 weeks. During that 5 months I put myself through treatment at Rogers in Sheboygan, By the time I was supposed to start, I had gotten so bad on drugs I missed the PO apartments and lost another job. A very good job at that.
,..Even though my choices are my own and it's no one's fault but mine that I am where I am, I believe the system let me down. There should be legislation put in place to not allow landlords to deny ex-felons housing for convictions that are over 6 years old and the resources available in at least Sheboygan for struggling addicts needs so desperately. to be better funded and staffed. Thank you for reading this and hope changes can be made.
